Illia Horenko is a full professor at the Faculty of Informatics and at the Institute of Computational Sciences of the USI Lugano in Switzerland, holding a chair for Computational Time Series Analysis. He studied mathematics and informatics in Kiev and received a Ph.D. in applied mathematics from the Free University (FU) of Berlin. Before taking a position in Lugano, he spent several years as a postdoctoral research fellow and as an assistant professor in Berlin.
His research interests are focused on the development and High-Performance Computing implementation of tools for time-resolved data applications (time series). Application areas for the developed methods are problems from climate/weather research, computational finance and econometrics, biophysics, medicine, fluid mechanics and sociology. Prof. Horenko is a lead author of over 60 papers in the professional literature. He was an organizer of several big programs on mathematical and computational aspects of scientific computing and climate research and is a frequent reviewer for international funding agencies. Since 2014 he is the Mercator Fellow of the German Research Foundation.
At the Digital Future Science Match, he will talk about "Towards a Low-Cost High-Quality Extraction of Relationships and Features from Complex Systems".
