Stephan Frickenhaus chairs the Scientific Computing and Data Centre at Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI). His works on current developments in high performance computing and data analytics with special emphasis on data exploration in marine research. Frickenhaus received his Diploma in Theoretical Physics at the University Dortmund in 1992, working on computer algebra methods in particle theory. His Ph.D. in Theoretical Biophysics at the Humboldt-University Berlin focused on mathematical modeling in systems biology, and he continued research on parallel climate modeling simulations as post-doc at AWI in 1999. At Hochschule Bremerhaven he worked as joint professor in bioinformatics since 2004, where he concentrated on reproducible complex data analyses workflows. Currently, he is adjusting his research and teaching focus on scientific computing and data analyses in earth system sciences at AWI, jointly with the University of Bremen.
